Shopify Product Images: Sizes, Ratios, Files

Cream graphic tee with an elephant print shot as a product flat for an online store

In short

What Shopify actually requires from product images, what its help center recommends, and how to plan a shoot so your collection grid stays tidy and your pages stay fast.

Compared with Amazon, Shopify is permissive. It won't suppress a product because the background is off-white, and it accepts almost any common file type. That freedom cuts both ways. Nobody enforces consistency, so a store can slowly fill up with mismatched crops, heavy files, and grids that look ragged on mobile. This guide covers what Shopify's own documentation says and how to plan a shoot around it.

Everything below about limits and formats comes from Shopify's Help Center page on product media types (linked at the end). Design advice is labeled as our recommendation.

Shopify's official image specs

According to Shopify's Help Center:

  • Maximum dimensions: up to 5000 × 5000 px, or 25 megapixels.
  • Maximum file size: under 20 MB per image.
  • Suggested size for square images: 2048 × 2048 px "usually displays best."
  • Accepted formats: PNG and JPEG are listed as the best choices for most product images (PNG first). TIFF, BMP, GIF, SVG, HEIC, and WebP are also accepted, including animated GIF and WebP.
  • Automatic format delivery: Shopify's image service detects what the shopper's browser supports and serves the best available format.
  • Automatic resizing: when you upload an image, Shopify creates smaller versions for different parts of the theme, such as a large one for the product page and a compact one for collection grids.

Shopify also flags the issue that matters most for photographers. Featured images shown side by side on collection pages need a consistent aspect ratio if you want them to display at the same size. Themes can help by requesting consistent sizes from the Shopify CDN, but the cleanest fix is to shoot and crop consistently from the start.

Video and 3D, briefly

If you plan to add motion or 3D to a product page, Shopify's published limits are:

  • Video uploads: up to 10 minutes, up to 1 GB, up to 4K (4096 × 2160), in .mp4, .mov, or .webm. YouTube and Vimeo links can be embedded instead.
  • 3D models: GLB or USDZ, up to 500 MB. Files over 15 MB are optimized automatically.

Your theme has to support these media types. Shopify says all of its Online Store 2.0 themes and the Horizon family do.

Pick one aspect ratio and stick to it

Our biggest recommendation for Shopify stores is to choose a ratio before the shoot. Retrofitting one later means re-cropping, and sometimes reshooting products that were framed too tight.

  • Square (1:1) works for most hard goods, beauty, and accessories. It matches Shopify's 2048 × 2048 suggestion and makes Amazon cross-listing simpler.
  • Portrait (4:5 or 2:3) suits apparel, especially on-model images, because the figure fills the frame instead of floating in white space.
  • Mixed catalogs can use one ratio for every featured image and allow different ratios further down the gallery.

Write the ratio, the camera height, and the product-to-frame size into a short style guide. Then every reshoot and new SKU will match the existing grid.

How we'd plan a Shopify shoot

Shoot larger than you deliver

Capture at full camera resolution, then export web files near Shopify's suggested size. You keep room to crop for banners, ads, or a future redesign while upload files stay manageable.

Keep files lean

Shopify allows up to 20 MB, but a smaller file loads faster on a phone. A well-compressed JPEG at roughly 2048 px on the long side is usually plenty for a product page. PNG is the better choice when you need transparency, such as a cutout placed on a colored theme section.

Build a gallery, not just a hero

Shopify doesn't require multiple images, but shoppers depend on them. For each product we typically plan:

  1. A clean featured image on a consistent background
  2. Alternate angles
  3. A close detail of texture or finish
  4. A scale or in-hand shot
  5. One or two lifestyle frames
  6. Variant images for each colorway, so the swatch picker changes the photo

Variant photography

If a product comes in six colors, shoot all six with the same setup in the same session. Shopify can attach an image to each variant, and shoppers notice when one color looks like it came from another day.

Alt text and file names

Shopify lets you add alt text to every product image. Describe what's in the frame plainly ("black leather crossbody bag, front view"). It helps accessibility and gives search engines context. Descriptive file names, such as crossbody-black-front.jpg, keep your media library searchable.

Common mistakes we see on Shopify stores

  • Uploading straight from the camera. Full-resolution files near the 20 MB limit slow down product pages for no visible gain.
  • Cropping each product by eye. Small differences in framing turn into an uneven collection grid.
  • Skipping variant photos. Using one colorway's image for every variant leads to "not as pictured" returns.
  • Empty alt text. It's a quick fix that improves accessibility and search context.

White background or lifestyle?

Shopify doesn't require white, which leaves the choice to your brand. Many stores use a clean, consistent background for collection grids, where uniformity reads as polish, and save lifestyle or AI-assisted scenes for product galleries and homepage sections. Our AI-assisted imaging service starts from real studio photos of your product and places them on generated models or settings. It's useful when you need seasonal scenes without booking a location.

Working with a studio

Vidd Studios shoots ecommerce product, flat lay, beauty, jewelry, and on-model apparel images from Covina for brands across LA County. Tell us your Shopify theme and preferred ratio, and we'll frame the shoot to fit it. Half-day sessions run up to four hours and full days up to eight. Retouching is priced per image, with standard and rush turnaround. See the LA product photography page for details, or the half-day vs. full-day guide to scope your session.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best image size for Shopify products?

Shopify says square images around 2048 × 2048 px usually display best. Uploads can go up to 5000 × 5000 px (25 MP).

What is the maximum file size Shopify accepts?

Product and collection images must be under 20 MB.

Should I use JPEG or PNG on Shopify?

Shopify lists PNG and then JPEG as the best formats for most product images. In practice, JPEG suits photos on solid backgrounds, and PNG works best when you need transparency. Shopify then serves the most efficient format each browser supports.

Why do my collection page images look different sizes?

Your featured images probably use different aspect ratios. Shopify recommends a consistent ratio for featured images so they display uniformly.

Do Shopify images need a white background?

No. Shopify has no background rule. A consistent background across your catalog is a design choice, not a platform requirement.
